How to Import and Export Digital Certificates on an Internet Browser.

This document steps through the process of importing and exporting digital certificates to and from your browser. There are several reasons you might want to do this:

  • It lets you save a backup copy of your certificate to a floppy for safe keeping.
  • You copy the certificate from your work computer to your home computer.
  • Allows you to move your certificate from Netscape Navigator to Microsoft Internet Explorer. NOTE: Microsoft Internet Explorer exports files that are incompatible with Netscape Navigator, however, you will have the ability to re-load your certificate in Netscape Navigator. Contact the Technical Help Desk if you need assistance. Click on the link below for instructions to move your certificate from Netscape Navigator to Microsoft Internet Explorer.

IMPORT to Netscape Navigator 4.x
Security Toolbar 1. Click the Security Icon on the browser tool bar.
2. Click on Certificates - Yours.
Import Certificate 3. Scroll down and click on Import a Certificate
Select certificate to import

4. Highlight the filename of the certificate you want to import.

5. Click on Open.

Password to certicate that's being imported

6. Enter the password of the certificate to be imported.

7. Click OK.

The certificate should now be imported.



Export from Netscape Navigator 4.0
Security Toolbar 1. Click the Security Icon on the browser tool bar.
2. Click on Certificates - Yours.
Export certificate 3. Highlight certificate and click on Export.
Enter certificate password 4. Enter password for Certificate and click on OK.
Enter new password 5. Enter new password for the certificate that is being exported and click on OK.
Re-enter new password 6. Enter the new password again and click on OK.
Save location for certificate 7. Enter the filename of the certificate and click Save.
Export confirmed

A message will appear to validate saving of certificate.

8. Click OK.



IMPORT to Internet Explorer 4.0x-5.x
Internet Options

Toolbar IE5

1. For IE4.x, click the View button on your browser's Navigation Tool bar, and then select Internet Options. For IE5.x, click the Tools button on your browser's Navigation Tool bar, and then select Internet Options.
Internet Options - General 2. Click on the Content tab.
Content 3. In the Certificates section, click the Personal button.
Import a certificate 4. Now click on the Import button.

5. Enter the Password for the certificate that is being imported.

6. Enter the location of the certificate into the "Certificate file to import:" or use the Browse button to find its location.

7. Click OK.

Certificate list The certificate should now appear in your certificate list.


EXPORT from Internet Explorer 4.0x-5.x
Internet Options

Toolbar IE5

1. For IE4.x, click the View button on your browser's Navigation Tool bar, and then select Internet Options. For IE5.x, click the Tools button on your browser's Navigation Tool bar, and then select Internet Options.
Internet Options - General 2. Click on the Content tab.
Content 3. In the Certificates section, click the Personal button.
Export certificate 4. Select the certificate to be exported and click the Export button.
Export certificate

5. Enter the Password for the certificate that is being exported.

6. Enter filename it will be saved as and click OK.

Success

A message will appear to validate saving of certificate.

7. Click OK.
