How soon do I need to download my Digital Certificate? You should download your Digital Certificate within one month of receipt. Digital Certificates that are not downloaded within this time period will be removed from the system.

I keep getting a window asking for my Netscape Password!

At some point in the past you may have told Netscape to use a Netscape password. If so, you will get a dialog box like this when you try to connect to a secure site:

IMAGE: Netscape Password Dialog Box

This is a browser specific password, not your Qwest PIN. It is stored locally on your machine. If you do not remember this password, no one can reset it for you. This password is stored in the Netscape preferences on your computer. You must delete the certificate files on your computer, and then get a new certificate.

Note: If you have certificates associated with other companies besides Qwest Communications, deletion of certificate files on your computer may result in deletion of those certificates from your Netscape browser.

To continue with the deletion of certificate files on your computer, complete the following steps:

  1. Exit Netscape
  2. Remove the old files
    • On MS Windows

    • Using Windows Explorer or File Manager, go to the directory in which Netscape is installed (often C:\Program Files\Netscape\Users\<user's profile name or default> ) and delete the files cert7.db, cert5.db, key.db key3.db, and secmod.db if they exist.
    • On UNIX

    • cd $HOME/.netscape directory
      rm cert* key*
    • On the Macintosh

    • Find all of the following files which exist: Certificates 5, Certificates 7, Certificates, Key Database and Key database 3 in the folder System Folder:Preferences:Netscape:Security and drag them to the Trash can.
  3. Start up Netscape and go to E-Business Home Page
  4. Obtain a Qwest issued certificate

  5. Note: To Communicator users, Communicator stores the files in a different location. Communicator has a directory for each user you set up. The key and cert files are stored in that user directory.

I get a window that says I do not have a certificate? You may not have applied for a Qwest certificate.
You can use your browser to see if you have a certificate and if it was issued by Qwest.
Complete the following steps to check your certificate.
  1. Click the Security button on your browser's Navigation Tool bar.
  2. On the Security Info page, under Certificates, click Yours.
  3. In the list of certificates, find the certificate you want to check. If you can not find it, you will need to obtain a Qwest issued certificate.
If the certificate is there, select it and then click the View button.
  4. In the View a Personal Certificate window see if it was issued by Qwest. If it was not, you will need to obtain a Qwest issued certificate. If it was issued by Qwest, contact the Technical Help Desk.
